Will an espresso machine fit under your cabinets? Measure the whole workflow.

A machine can fit by its listed height and still be awkward to use. Before ordering, measure the body, the space needed to reach or remove the water tank, and the room for your grinder and daily preparation. Use the exact model’s manual for access and operating instructions.

Worked examples: Breville Bambino BES450 and Bambino Plus BES500Manufacturer specs checked Oct 31, 2026
Short answer: Measure your usable counter width, depth, and counter-to-obstruction height. Compare those measurements with the exact machine and grinder dimensions, then test the motions you will repeat: filling the tank, inserting the portafilter, placing cups, steaming milk, and cleaning. A listed footprint describes the body; it does not prove that the machine is usable in your space.

Start with the manufacturer’s dimensions

Breville lists the standard Bambino BES450 at 11.9 W × 6.1 D × 13.5 H inches, and the Bambino Plus BES500 at 11.9 W × 7.4 D × 14.3 H inches. These are body measurements, not a clearance guarantee. Another color, model code, region, or revision may have different documentation, so check the product and manual you plan to buy.

Measure your counter in three directions

  1. Width: Measure the clear span between walls, cabinets, or other fixed items. Allow separate space for the machine, grinder, and a place to set the portafilter or cup. Do not assume all listed machine widths include enough room to work at the sides.
  2. Depth: Measure from the backsplash to the counter edge. Include any rear gap required by the manual, plus the front room needed to insert the portafilter, place a cup, and work safely. Check where the power cord and water tank sit.
  3. Height: Measure from the countertop to the lowest obstruction directly above the machine. Check cabinet trim, handles, lights, and shelves. Compare this clearance with the body height, then separately check access to anything that lifts or opens upward.
Measure the tightest point. A backsplash or cabinet may not be perfectly level. Take measurements at the front and back of the proposed space and use the smaller usable figure.

Check the motions the spec sheet leaves out

Read the manual and rehearse the machine’s daily tasks with a cardboard outline or tape on the counter. For the Bambino Plus, the manual identifies a removable 64 fl oz tank at the rear and shows tank removal; the machine’s manual also gives installation and use guidance. Treat this as a model-specific access check, not a general rule that every machine needs the same extra number of inches.

  • Can you fill or remove the reservoir without hitting the cabinet or moving other equipment?
  • Can you lock in the portafilter without striking a wall or cabinet door?
  • Can you place the cup and milk jug where the manufacturer intends?
  • Can you reach controls, clean the drip tray, and wipe the surrounding counter?
  • Can the grinder lid open and the grounds container come out in the same location?

If the answer depends on sliding the machine forward, measure where it will sit while you use it. Confirm that the cord, tank, drip tray, and nearby objects remain accessible in that position.

Fit the grinder and prep zone too

For a separate grinder, add its width to the machine width if they sit side by side. For depth, compare their maximum depths and then add the front prep area you need. Also check hopper-lid clearance and whether beans can be poured in place. These are planning calculations; the arrangement still needs a physical check with the exact products.

Our setup planner lets you enter your own machine, grinder, counter, and access measurements. It performs simple width, depth, and height checks only. It cannot account for every shape, cord route, moving part, safety instruction, or preferred working position, so read the product manual and verify the layout before purchase.

Before you order

  1. Confirm the full model code, region, and color on the listing.
  2. Get dimensions and access instructions from the manufacturer’s page and manual.
  3. Measure the counter and overhead obstruction at the exact intended location.
  4. Account for the grinder, cord, tank movement, portafilter, cup, milk jug, and cleanup.
  5. Verify seller, warranty, current price, delivery, and return terms at checkout.
